Our March/April Instructor Development Course begins!

Our Instructor Development Course (IDC) candidates for March/April 2016 are Tai, Ronald, Gary and Arthur.

Downbelow resident Platinum Course Director Richard and our Go Pro team retain 100% success for all who have completed IDC with us.

They will be prepared with our 100% support in time for the next PADI Instructor Examination (IE). Taking advantage of the pre-IDC preparation period, they had time to practice their scuba skills and dive theory. Resident Platinum Course Director Richard Swann and the Go Pro Team will see what the candidates’ strengths are and what they might need work on, but we’ve got plenty of time for practise before the IE and prepare them for the real world of dive instruction afterwards.

We are confident that Tai, Ronald, Gary and Arthur will achieve their goals at the IE to become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors and begin living their diving dream, because our Go Pro team is as committed as they are!

For more information on our professional scuba diving courses get in touch with one of our experienced and helpful Go PRO advisors based at our Kota Kinabalu HQ, Sabah, Borneo!

Ecotourism-focused activities in Sabah!

As part of their Expedition Borneo program, the Expedition Borneo group from Denmark (AdventureDK) visited Sandakan.

Sandakan is the second-largest city in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu and is an historical city, it served as the capital for the British North Borneo during colonial times.

While in Bilit Village in Sandakan, they enjoyed a friendly football match with the villagers, and cooked local cuisine. They made themselves Chicken Curry and Sweet & Sour River Prawns and loved it! Thanks to the host, Mrs. Madiah, they got to know Sabah’s rich culture and traditions! They contributed to a Conservation Project by donating trees and spent some time planting them along the Kinabatangan River. They wrote their names and the date on a plaque so that they can check on their tree’s progress throughout future visits.

Contact our Head Office to experience such an itinerary as our Danish adventurers’ on their Expedition Borneo program! One of our experienced staff can create a program to suit your needs to explore exotic Sabah!

Danish Adventurers Experienced Exotic Wildlife on Safari in Borneo

Downbelow Marine & Wildlife Adventures specialise in adventure group travel offering a one month experience of Borneo. During this one month adventure, our guests spend a few nights staying on the Kinabatangan River.

The Kinabatangan River is Sabah’s longest river and the second longest in the whole of Malaysia. In addition to the birds, the river is home to 10 primates: Orang Utan, Proboscis Monkeys, Macaques, Maroon Langur and Bornean Gibbon; making this one of only 2 places known on earth that has 10 primates!

Our adventure groups from Denmark went on the Kinabatangan River cruise where they saw an Orang Utan resting in a tall tree, a large Crocodile, lots of Proboscis Monkeys, Silver Leaf Langurs, Wrinkled Hornbills, Pied Hornbills and Bushy Tail Hornbills. Some of them went for a forest night walk along the Kinabatangan River after dinner and saw a few types of Kingfishers sleeping on branches, Long Tail Macaques, Pig Tailed Macaques, lots of spiders and even a snake.

USW students, our future scientists, in Sabah!

Downbelow is always honoured to receive groups of eager students from The University of South Wales, and train our future scientific divers.

This field study includes both water and land expeditions in Sabah for students of University of South Wales (USW) to conduct their annual tropical ecology studies.

The group learned some of the specialised skills and techniques for underwater visual census (UVC) surveys to collect data on fish and benthic communities, line intercept transects and coral reef surveys.

During their week-long stay at our premier PADI 5Star IDC Dive Centre in TAR marine park, our resident PADI Platinum Course Director Richard Swann assisted by an experienced team of PADI professionals led the group for training in scientific diving.

Danish Adventurers Certified as Open Water/Advaned Open Water Divers!

For a 30-day adventure (Expedition Borneo program), a group from Denmark will be discovering the natural beauty of Sabah’s many attractions and under the safety-conscious supervision of our experienced staff throughout.

As part of their Expedition Borneo program, the group first spent a week at our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya Island and learned to scuba dive.

We’ve put up a huge camping tent that comfortably caters to more than 20 people right next to our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya Island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. While they camped and were in the good hands of our resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann and the rest of the Downbelow Instructors, they learned to scuba dive and were certified as PADI Open Water divers and some continued their education with the Advanced Open Water course. They also got a unique education on Project Aware – Sharks in Peril & Coral Reef Conservation.

More adventures will follow that involve the best of Sabah, such as white water rafting the raging Padas River, climbing to Low’s Peak on iconic Mount Kinabalu, wildlife safaris at the Kinabatangan River and jungle trekking historic forest trails! During all activities, our high standards of safety are regularly monitored and updated for our adventure groups’ enjoyment!

If you’re looking for group activities, be it team building, scuba diver training or environmental awareness, get in touch and let’s see how we can get your group camping on Gaya island.

Sabah’s Lost World

Don’t we fancy going into places where not many people have gone before us? Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could glance at nature that existed during the primal eras?

The Maliau Basin Conservation Area is one of the primary tropical rainforests. It was never permanently inhabited by humans.

It is in a remote area in the south central part of Sabah with an area of 588.4Km2. It takes almost 6 days to trek the area; an experienced guide will take you on a trail that loops around the rainforest.  Some of the highlights of the adventures are the spectacular and huge 7 tiered water fall called The Maliau Fall and a garden of pitcher plants at Nepenthes trails, in addition to seeing all kinds of animals that live in this amazing place that has been relatively untouched for thousands of years.

PADI Instructor Development Course

The Instructor Development Course is a process that develops dive professionals into instructors ready for real world teaching. As a Master Instructor at Downbelow 5* IDC Centre I have met great candidates from various countries who have very different experiences during IDC which is really great value for myself.

To be a great PADI Instructor, participants need a great IDC experience and as a Downbelow GoPro team member, it is my duty to contribute to this by sharing my knowledge.

My own experience in teaching is very important for me to share during the IDC training process so we conduct realistic training as much as possible building candidates “real world” experience throughout training. I always try to remember my own instructor development course and Instructor Examination recalling what I needed at that time then I can help deliver this to our future IDC candidates.

I really feel proud of our candidates on the day of their IE with everyone ready and confident sitting inside the Examination room well prepared. The PADI IDC program has given me a great deal of experience enabling me to be a good influence on others and to improve to be the best I can be.
