About Charlotte Fong

I was laughed at terribly for burning cereal at work, so i taught myself to cook. Not surprisingly, I began to gain a significant amount of weight. I'm now a mother to 27 guppies, a cat, a dog and a man-child.

June Newsletter of 2019

Hi everyone! Can you believe it? Half the year of 2019 is already done and dusted! As we enter the second half of the year, we remain grateful for all the support shown to us from our guests all over the world and hope that we continue to serve our future and returning guests with the 5-Star service that we have come to be known for!

In this brand new June Newsletter of 2019, Downbelow Marine & Wildlife Adventures has gathered a selection of special happenings for your reading pleasure as well as to showcase the beauty of Sabah and give you an insight on us as a company.

The month of June was jam-packed with adventurous groups and solo travellers! We are extremely humbled by their trust in us and the friendships forged over the time together. The famed Gurkhas of the British Army joined us for their adventure training, Cardiff University UK’s Marine Biology returned for their annual marine field trip, Australian youth groups and an Adventure Group from Denmark kept us on our toes! Read up on our team member’s adventure into the deep blue of the beautiful island of Sipadan and another that ventured into heart of  the lush Borneo rainforest! Once again, we congratulate our Director for his win as a PADI Course Director for the 7th consecutive year!

New on the blog is our Kinabalu Park Birding Day Trip, where we will explain the journey to the mountains with your own private vehicle, personal driver and a professional Bird Guide. Be in awe of the ever majestic but extremely shy Mount Kinabalu. Often hidden behind clouds, the Mount Kinabalu is normally photographed in the wee hours of the morning when there are less clouds. Which brings us to why our Birding Daytrip begins quite early in the morning, not only will you be treated to a clearer view of Mount Kinabalu but you will have a higher chance of spotting the Borneo Birds when they are most active (which is early in the morning!).

Bird Watching in Borneo

Here at Downbelow Adventures in Borneo, we are always curating the best holiday programmes for our guests. To continue sharing our love for Borneo Birds, we have launched our brand new Kinabalu Park Birding Day Trip, a sweet treat for those who love bird watching! Our Kinabalu Park birding day trip offers the best way to enjoy bird watching in the low montane forest of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinabalu Park. Our experienced specialised birding guide will take you to search for the many species that are endemic to Sabah.

Bird Watching at Kinabalu Park

Being the third largest island in the world, Borneo is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world. It is split between three countries – Brunei Darussalam, the states Sabah and Sarawak of Malaysia and Kalimantan of Indonesia. Within its vast area, Borneo is home to more than 600 species of birds. More than 300 species are typical of the tropical evergreen rainforest that in prehistory covered the island and today is still one of the major habitat types. It is at the centre of the evolution and distribution of many endemic species of plants and animals of Borneo. It is an important refuge for many endemic forest species, including the Bornean Orangutan, Pygmy Elephant, and Bornean Clouded Leopard.

326 species have been recorded in Kinabalu Park. Of these, 262 species are residents and 23 are endemic to Borneo. The park is the most important IBA (Important Bird and Biodiversity Area) site for montane birds in East Malaysia as well as for endemics such as the Mountain Serpent-Eagle. Among the habitats worth mentioning are montane forests, peat-swamp and heath-like forests, lowland forest, rivers and lakes. Montane forests of Borneo are cooler, damper, more stunted, mossy and shrouded in mist because of the increasing altitude. The amazing species of birds you can find in this environment is abundant, such as Indigo Flycatcher, Short-tailed Magpie and the endemic Bornean Mountain Whistler which can be spotted here.

The Journey To The Mountains

The almost 2 hour drive to Kinabalu Park is in itself a fascinating experience. Catching glimpses of Mt Kinabalu is an unforgettable sight and as it approaches it seems to grow and draws you nearer. Arriving at Kinabalu Park, the climate is noticeably cooler as there is little humidity. The air is fresh and during the day, it can be a very comfortable 24-26 degrees. Explore the stunning vegetation of the tropical Borneon highland forest that is brimming with wildlife. Please discuss with our guide on some of your favorite birds. With our sharp eyed and highly experienced senior birding guide Jason, we are confident that you will be in good hands as he will point out and supply you with ample information of the various birds.

Our Commitment to Quality

We only offer this day trip on a private basis. This is the best way to enjoy a relaxing bird watching trip for you serious birders out there! You will not be part of a large tour. You will have your own private vehicle, driver and bird guide for 8 hours. Remember to have on your favorite hiking boots as the rainforest floor can be slippery. Bringing along a pair of binoculars and a refillable water bottle is greatly recommended.

Also, feel free to peruse our company’s very own Borneo Birds Identification album. Our Directors have collected an extensive array of Borneo birds over the years. It is our hope that this very personal album may help you identify the local birds here and bring you as much joy as it has with our directors.

To view the itinerary, full list of things to bring and prices, please feel free to check out this page here : Kinabalu Park Birding Day Trip. For the seasoned bird-watching enthusiasts, we also recommend our 3 days 2 nights Tabin Specialised Birding programme as and our 3D/2N Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley Package with a Private Birding Guide. With these three locations you will see the birding highlights of Borneo in their natural habitat.  All programs can be booked online for effortless travel.
