Our goal is not just to certify you as a PADI Instructor at the end of the PADI Instructor Development Course, but also to help you be fully prepared for the real world of professional scuba diver training and at the same time to give you the best chances of employment, anywhere in the world. As you would expect from a PADI 5 Star Career Development Centre, we have good network contacts who are often looking for employees; and to date, newly qualified instructors looking for their career in scuba diving have found employment.

We conduct five IDCs throughout the year so check out our annual IDC schedule.  We are the only dive centre in Sabah to boast two PADI Course Directors. Our Platinum PADI Course Director is British born Richard Swann who is also our company Managing Director. With over 20 years of experience in the scuba diving industry, Richard was awarded PADI’s Platinum Course Director status and was one of only 71 Course Directors worldwide to earn this level of recognition last year. Our second resident PADI Course Director is Fauzi (aka Pablo). He is a local Sabahan and highly respected instructor trainer. Read more about Richard Swann our Platinum PADI Course Director & his professional instructor team.

One of the huge advantages of choosing to do your PADI IDC with us is the small class size that we guarantee. Since the whole course is focused on practicing your teaching techniques both in the classroom and in the water, a small group means that you will get more practice. We have a 100% pass rate for both our IDC course and the IE (PADI Instructor Examination).  We support you all the way and if we feel that you need extra support to be successful in the IE, we will advise and work with you to ensure you are well prepared; which is why our success rate is very high!

What Is Scuba Diving Like In Tunku Abdul Rahman Park?

Dive Sites & Scuba Diving In TARP

There are not many places in the world that offer a bustling city full of modern facilities and then right on the doorstep, just 8 minutes by speedboat from the central entertainment district, a stunning tropical marine paradise. Sabah’s capital, Kota Kinabalu, is such a place and the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, locally known as the TAR Park, is home to Downbelow’s PADI 5 Star IDC Dive & Adventure Centre on Gaya Island, just 8 minutes by speedboat from the mainland.

Named after Malaysia’s first prime minister, covering and area of 50km², the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park was gazetted as a national park in 1974. Consequently the area’s fauna, flora and marine eco-systems enjoy the protection of the government appointed environmental body, Sabah Parks. So, what is scuba diving like in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park? Read on and we will tell you it’s fascinating dive sites and marine life!

The Dive Sites

Dive sites within the park offer some great scuba diving for beginners and experienced divers alike. TARP is also great for underwater photographers, providing lots of macro subjects in relatively shallow calm water.

The coral reefs feature lots of very healthy hard and soft coral. Our scuba diving guests are often very surprised to see such healthy corals so close to a city. We have 49 dive sites to choose from & our divemasters will choose the best dive sites depending on the sea & weather conditions, plus individual diver ability on the day.

Dive sites are predominantly sloping coral reef and sand from 2m to 25m depth. We also have mangrove areas providing protection for juvenile fish. In the park, we have the KM Kuraman Wreck Dive Site which is home to a variety of critters and offers a great intro to wreck diving, especially for those completing a PADI Advanced Course.

Coral Reefs In TARP Is Home To A Variety Of Marine Life

The Marine Life

Macro life is what we are passionate about, but having said that, there are plenty of larger marine creatures to be found. We regularly see turtles and rays and one of our nearby dive sites became home to a small group of Black Tip Reef Sharks.

February to April is traditionally whaleshark season however sightings are not guaranteed and quite rare but its fun to know we share their water and they could appear any time during the season. Schools of barracuda, snappers and fusiliers are common. We often see cuttlefish, moray eels, lionfish and pufferfish. Nudibranchs are common, so too are all 7 species of clownfish, all of which can be seen in just one dive site! Many species of crustaceans, scorpionfish, pipefish, demon stingers, cuttlefish and stonefish are also usual suspects. We often find frogfish, ghostpipefish and, once in a while, the highly prized blue ringed octopus!

Multiple day dive packages offer great value for money and you won’t see the same dive site twice – unless you wanted to of course, which does happen!

Effortless Travel In Borneo

In many ways technological advancement has changed the way we travel, making for hassle free and effortless booking options. In other words technology has totally revolutionised the tourism industry. Nowadays there are many online travel agents that allow you to book and plan your holiday at the click of a button. However with an overflow of feeds from different social media platforms, beautiful images and so many “must do’s” we are flooded with too much information and too many choices which can lead to a difficult decision process.

Research has shown that more than 70% of travellers now plan their trip on the internet, while only 13% still use high street travel agencies to prepare their itinerary.

While online travel agents offer the convenience of planning and booking your holiday via the world wide web, more effort and time will usually be necessary to research for a specialized attraction and very often in the online world you will meet sites giving you information with no proof of reliable sources. In Sabah for example there are plenty of niche attractions that do not get the recognition they deserve and may never be found just by hours of searching on the internet.

At Downbelow Adventures (aka Adventures in Borneo) we have recognised the need to filter the overwhelming amount of options presented to our clients.

With 20 years of credential, at Downbelow Adventures we pride ourselves as your Borneo Adventure Specialist. In other words, effortless travel in Borneo!

We also offer our clients the simplicity of online bookings with instant confirmation and payment with no booking & credit card fees. Online bookings still enjoy our full customer service with a dedicated travel consultant for tailored itinerary making a seamless and even more effortless travel in Borneo experience.

So get in touch with us today, tell us your travel dates, number of people traveling, your budget and your interests and we will present to you a tailored suggested itinerary. Alternatively visit our website where a selected number of tailored packages are available online.

SeacSub Freediving Fins Review

The SeacSub Motus Full Foot Fin is a new addition to our product range of quality fins at Downbelow Dive Shop. It is the latest free dive fins from SeacSub and has many advantageous features. I decided to give it a try and selected the Camo Motus Long Fin. It was an interesting trial so read on for the SeacSub Freediving Fins review.

SeacSub Freediving Fins Review & Assessment After Test Dives

This fin consist of interchangeable blade fin with a two-material closed pocket and makes it convenient to change colour, length or if the blade is damaged. The foot pocket is made of double density material, with hard thermoplastic rubber as its sole and ribs. It is soft to fit in order to optimise comfort and performance ratio. Though very tough, it is still extremely comfortable to wear. The material of the blade is a special technopolymer formulated to emphasises the flexibility and reactivity of the blade. The water really does pass over the fin with ease and yet minimal effort from the leg muscles is required.

SeacSub Freediving Fins Review

Trying out the SeacSub Motus Full Foot Fin at Downbelow PADI 5 Star CDC Dive Centre, Gaya Island, TARP

I actually tried the fins with both scuba diving and freediving. Based on that experience, it is clearly a free dive fin as it does not handle the additional weight of equipment so well. However, it could still be used if you wanted an all rounder.

Overall I really like these fins and found them very comfortable, effortless to use, light to travel with and reasonably priced for a specialised fin. If you are visiting us at our Downbelow PADI 5 Star CDC Dive Centres, I would be happy to let you try our demo pair provided the size fits. Just ask the island office for a trial to go freediving with SeacSub Motus Full Foot Fin.

Useful Information for Snorkelling and Scuba Diving

We have put together some useful information for snorkelling and scuba diving. The Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park just offshore the city is a fantastic location for snorkelling & scuba diving day trips for beginners and experienced water enthusiasts.

However not all day trips are the same, in fact there are some pretty major differences that you should be aware of before parting with your hard earned dollars.

Useful Information for Snorkelling and Scuba Diving

We Pride Ourselves In Customised Small Group Activities

Snorkelling & scuba diving day trips range in price between MYR 200.00 and MYR 450.00 per person per day and fall into three categories.

  1. Do It Yourself (D.I.Y): You need to buy your own jetty ticket and permit to enter the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, rent or take along your own equipment, use the public water taxi’s and snorkel from the public beaches. D.I.Y options are not usually suitable for scuba divers.
  2. Day Tour Operators (D.T.O): Here you can join a daily trip organised by operators based on the mainland of Kota Kinabalu. You will need to find your way to the mainland jetty, from there you will join the operators boat for the day. Usually included in the package are the jetty fees, permit fees, equipment rental and a local set lunch at one of the public cafe’s on the public island.
  3. Specialised Programs: There are only two companies, one of which is Downbelow Marine & Wildlife Adventures Sdn Bhd offering specialised snorkelling & scuba diving programs from within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park itself. By joining one of these programs you will be collected from your hotel in Kota Kinabalu and join a personalised program away from the crowds. Your jetty fees, permit fees, equipment, professionally qualified guide will be included in the program.

Options 1 & 2 are the cheaper options and do not provide you with the best experience of the underwater world. If you decide on a D.I.Y package you will be limited to crowed public beaches where the coral has been damaged beyond recognition from the endless amount of tourists climbing over it. Option 2, joining a day tour operator limits your opportunity to see the best sites on the day. You will be one of many clients on the boat and everyone will have different levels of experience, divers and snorkelers will be mixed together, beginners mixed with more advanced divers on the same dive site.

Things You Need To Know About Snorkelling and Scuba Diving

At Downbelow We Have Small Groups on Different Boats to Maximise Your Experience

Surprisingly, operators are un-regulated in Sabah in terms of the qualification required to take people snorkelling and scuba diving which means you will likely be with a guide that does not hold any professional qualification to take you into the water and does not understand the ocean well enough to know where to take you to see the best marine life.

By joining a specialised snorkelling safari or scuba diving program with Downbelow Marine & Wildlife Adventures. You are giving yourself the best opportunity to see the best coral sites within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and since you are probably only visiting once or twice in a lifetime it is surely worth the extra few dollars. Our programs are specialised which means they are conducted by professionally qualified guides who will ensure your safety and enjoyment. We know which coral sites are performing well on the day and since we do not mix different levels of experience and we do not mix people on different activities, your experience is not compromised. During your surface interval you return to one of our private PADI 5 Star CDC Dive Centres, either on Gaya Island or Manukan Island away from the crowds on the public beaches used by the D.I.Y & D.T.O’s.

Useful Information for Snorkelling and Scuba Diving

Between Activities We Return To Our Private PADI 5* Dive Centres. Away From The Crowds.

Another important factor is safety. Cheaper packages have to cut the cost somewhere and its usually on maintenance, equipment testing, air filters for tanks and servicing. All these are hidden from you, you don’t know if your equipment has been sanitised, you don’t know if the air filter on the compressor is regularity changed and you don’t see the service history of your equipment. At Downbelow Marine & Wildlife Adventures we have qualified professionals in charge of our equipment maintenance and we do not compromise to save money.

Our specialised programs are designed and managed by our resident Platinum PADI Course Director Richard Swann, PADI Course Director Pablo and their team of PADI professionals. Our wealth of experience ensures that you have the best experience during your snorkelling and scuba diving program. To book your snorkelling & scuba diving specialised program contact us or book online.

Keeping Downbelow Boats Reliable

In a busy PADI 5 Star Career Development Centre dive operation such as Downbelow Marine & Wildlife Adventures, keeping Downbelow boats reliable and fully operational is very important for many obvious reasons. Needless to say safety is definitely top of the list.

We regularly service and maintain in house, however our boats do work very hard so from time to time a replacement power unit is more cost effective than trying to repair a tired engine.

We recently chose to exchange our 2x 150hp configuration for a single Yamaha F250 commercial grade option on one of our 35ft dive boats as these have proven to be a very reliable unit and able to handle the heavy dive equipment we regularly carry.

The Yamaha F250 is perfect for our Dive Operations

Swiftly supplied and installed for a reasonable price by our local Yamaha dealer EM Technology Marine Sdn Bhd we have her straight back to work within a day! After an hour of sea trials with our head Captain Cody and the installation technicians some height adjustments and fine tuning were carried out and we are set up to continue serving our divers with the reliable safe service they expect from the team at the Downbelow Dive Centre.

The Yamaha F250 has proven to be able to handle the weight with ease and also deliver reliability with speed when needed we have also noticed overall she uses less fuel than the previous twin engine set up so it comes well recommended!

If you own a boat in East Malaysia and are in need of a Yamaha marine engine, contact Alex Hii and his experienced team at E.M Technology Marine Sdn Bhd and if you require a great day of reliable scuba diving, come join us at Downbelow Marine & Wildlife Adventures PADI CDC!

Training Aids in the PADI IDC

What is a training aid? In the context of PADI Instructor Development Course, we encourage its use particularly during Knowledge Development sessions. We will do a role play of dive students not understanding questions or topics from various dive courses and use the training aids in the PADI IDC. Here are images of our IDC candidates doing a wonderful job during their Instructor Development Course.

Training Aids in the PADI IDC

Giant RDP tables or digital ERDP projected on screen assists students to understand better and also to point out errors.

Instructor candidates use training aids in the PADI IDC so that it helps make the information being explained to be more understandable to future “students”. Items used must clearly benefit learning and can include just about anything. However they do need to connect the topic to the real world of diving in a meaningful way.

Training Aids in the PADI IDC

Dive equipment that will be used on your course can make a great training aid in class. So when students experience using it for the first time in water they have a good level of understanding of how it will work.

The PADI App, dive equipment, videos, pictures, books are among the PADI materials that make great aids. There are many non dive related items such as ping pong ball and golf ball which can assist demonstrating buoyancy or a human shaped sponge which can help explain nitrogen absorption that also make great aids which benefit learning.
