UNESCO World Heritage Site

Leaving the city behind, the 2.5 hrs drive up to Kinabalu National Park is a fascinating experience as you witness how the locals have settled at the foothills of the Crocker Range running small stalls selling their own crop, food and handicraft. Catching glimpses of the Mighty Mt Kinabalu is an unforgettable sight and as it approaches it seems to grow and draws you nearer. En-route we will stop at the hill village of Nabalu to savour some local fruits or purchase their handicrafts.

Arriving at Kinabalu Park, the climate is noticeably cooler, with very little humidity, the air is fresh and during the day a comfortable 24 degrees if the sun is shinning. Here, you will see the incredible biodiversity that designated Kinabalu Park as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stroll by rivers and follow mountain trails to spot rare and endemic species of flora and fauna that can be found in the park. The Botanical Garden is a comprehensive information centre cataloging the species of plant contained within Kinabalu Park offering education to the public which makes the trip ever more interesting when you know what you are looking at.

Poring Hot Springs

After a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, you head to Poring Hot Springs – approximately 30 minutes from Kinabalu National Park. There are a lot of things to do at Poring Hot Springs such as visit the butterfly conservation centre or the orchid gardens. See the rainforest from a different perspective at 45m elevation along canopy walkways. If you are lucky, you may even see a Rafflesia Flower in bloom – largest flower in the world! After all that, pamper yourself with a nice soak in the natural hot baths before heading to your room to freshen up before dinner.

The following day for those adventurous types, trek through the jungle rainforest to Langganan Waterfall. Its a moderately challenging 3 hour trek of 7km to the tallest waterfall in Sabah, a stunning 100m high. If you are a runner its a superb trail run.
