The Adventures in Borneo program begins every 10th of the month starting from June until December 2019. Participants of the program are required to arrive in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on the 10th.

The Adventurers in Borneo program welcomes join-in participants to experience ocean fun, sports adventure, conservation, natural wonders and wildlife in one comprehensive and exciting package with all logistics taken care of  for you in a cost effective package that saves you time and money.

Have a rare opportunity to go through unforgettable activities with likeminded adventurers such as scuba dive or snorkel in a beautiful marine park, contribute to the ocean by participating in marine conservation activities, get your adrenaline pumping and go white water river rafting, learn about unique and endemic Borneo flora, see fascinating animals such as Borneo Pygmy Elephants, Orang-utan, Proboscis monkeys, Bornean sun bear and more!

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling, Gaya Island

Surrounded by primary rainforest and tropical ocean, our Downbelow PADI 5 Star CDC Dive Centre Gaya Island in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park treats guests with stunning views and a private beach all to themselves. Guided by our team of PADI Professionals, participants of the program can enjoy scuba diving or snorkelling at some of the best sites in the park to see tropical marine life and beautiful soft corals. The fun continues as you will also be part something rewarding and meaningful as you lend your hands to contribute to marine conservation. The activity is intended to raise awareness and spread education on the issues the ocean is facing and how we can combat them.

Padas White Water Rafting

Padas White Water Rafting day trip lets you ride Class III-IV White Water Rapids that are fun, exciting and promise you a trip that you will never forget. Located near the southwestern interior of Sabah that is only accessible by train (used since the late 19th century in Borneo), its 9km of white water rafting makes it one of the longest rafting journey in Borneo.

Kinabalu National Park & Poring Hot Springs

Discover nature wonders in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kinabalu National Park and Poring Hot Springs. See incredible biodiversity in Kinabalu Park and stroll by rivers and follow mountain trails to spot rare and endemic species of flora and fauna that can be found in the park. You can also get a clear glimpse of the majestic Mt Kinabalu, the tallest mountain in Malaysia!

At Poring Hot Springs, trek through the jungle rainforest to Langganan Waterfall. A treat for the adventurous, the 3 hour trail is moderately challenging yet interesting as you reach Sabah’s tallest waterfall at 100m high.

Wildlife Adventure Safari in Sandakan & Kinabatangan

A perfect combination of wildlife adventure and conservation, learn how young and orphaned Orang-utan are cared for until they are ready to be released in their natural habitat at Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre. At the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, get to know the efforts undertaken by local authorities & NGO’s to protect sun bears and what you can do to contribute to the efforts.

Kinabatangan River is Sabah’s longest river and the second longest in the whole of Malaysia. It is home to some of the most varied wildlife in the world such as orang-utans, proboscis monkeys, Bornean gibbons, saltwater crocodiles, hornbills, Borneo pygmy elephant and much more!

Another destination that you will visit in the wildlife adventure segment are the Gomantong Caves. Gomantong Caves are world famous for its incredibly valuable bird nests. These are the nests of thousands of cave swiftlets that live in this limestone cave system. This edible bird nest, crafted by the birds from their saliva, are the most expensive animal products consumed by humans. It has been used in Chinese cooking for centuries, most commonly as Bird’s Nest Soup.

11D10N Adventures In Borneo

DAY 1: Arrive, airport pick up and transfer 20 minutes by coastal road to Downbelow Adventure Lodge, expedition orientation. Head down to the waterfront for breathtaking fiery sunsets, a welcome drink and a warm Malaysian welcome to the country dinner. You will soon notice the hustle and bustle of local night markets a blossoming arts and music scene and a rich culinary spectrum spanning street food to high end restaurants. This may be a city on the move with the 21st century, but its old-world charm and history are very much alive. Dinner included.

DAY 2: The next three days and two nights will be spent on Gaya Island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, camping under the stars. Transfer to our marina (10 minutes drive) speedboat to Gaya Island where we have a dive/adventure centre. Today enjoy snorkel safaris or try scuba diving for the first time. If you are already a qualified diver enjoy a days scuba diving in warm tropical waters. Overnight Island Camping. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included.

DAY 3: Today is all about conservation. You will learn the role coral plays in our environment, you will snorkel to find live coral that has broken and would otherwise perish and you will assist our dive team to re-plant the coral. We finish off the day with a beach and mangrove clean up as part of “giving back”. Overnight Island Camping. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included.

DAY 4: Wake up once more to the sound of the ocean and jungle around you. Today you will trek for 45 minutes to another part of the island through primary rainforest and a mangrove forest then Zip-Line from Gaya Island to Sapi Island before heading back to the mainland. The afternoon is at leisure, we are sure you will want to explore some local eateries as a group and enjoy some of Kota Kinabalu’s nightlife. Overnight at Downbelow Adventure Lodge. Breakfast included.

DAY 5: Today we head out for an awesome road and train trip into the interior for a day White Water Rafting the mighty PADAS River. Located approximately 1.5 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu and another 1 hour by train. These Class III-IV White Water Rapids are fun, exciting and promise a trip they will never forget. Overnight at Downbelow Adventure Lodge. Breakfast and Lunch included.

DAY 6: It is time to leave the bustling city of Kota Kinabalu that you have no doubt fallen in love with and find nature and wildlife. Transfer 2.5 hours to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinabalu National Park, visit the botanical gardens, canopy walkway at Poring Hot Springs. Overnight at Longhouse Local Homestay near Kinabalu Park. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

DAY 7: Early morning trekking to Langganan Waterfall (Sabah’s highest at 100m). Pass through Ranau that stood witness to the final weeks of the World War II Death marches. If time permits we may have the opportunity to visit Kundasang War Memorial. Transfer a further 4 hours by road to Sepilok Jungle Resort. The jungle comes alive at night. Enjoy drinks and tell stories while soaking up the atmosphere of adventure travel. Overnight Sepilok Jungle Resort twin share en-suite rooms. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

DAY 8: Today is an opportunity to go behind the scened for a volunteer service day at the Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre and Sun Bear Rehabilitation Centre. You will have the opportunity to learn more about the work that is carried out at the centres and assist in some daily routine work which could be preparing the animals’ food, painting fences, landscaping and general maintenance. All important jobs that need to be done to keep the centre operational. We do not have any direct contact with the animals but you will witness them in their natural habitat, you may even see the small babies, it will be a rewarding day to remember. Overnight Sepilok Jungle Resort twin share en-suite rooms. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

DAY 9: Today we road transfer 2 hours to the Kinabatangan River. En-route visit Gomantong Caves and learn about the famous Bat Caves. The Kinabatangan River is home to some of the most varied and easily accessible wildlife in all of South East Asia. River People, or Orang Sungei, live in small settlements spread out along the river and for the next 3 days and 2 nights you will be immersed in their culture and surrounding wildlife. You will arrive at lunch time, then you will have to freshen up before the afternoon river safari to search for wildlife. Elephants, orang-utans, crocodiles, proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills and myriad of birds live in the region. Overnight Bilit Adventure Lodge twin/triple/quad share en-suite rooms. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

DAY 10: Early morning river safari searching for wildlife. Visit local school across the river, play a football match with local children, learn about local cooking skills in the houses with the local community. Tree planting service afternoon. Jungle night walk searching for nocturnal animals. Time to party, local style with Rice Wine & Dancing with the villagers. Overnight Bilit Adventure Lodge twin/triple/quad share en-suite rooms. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

DAY 11: Wake up for the last time in the jungle, leisurely breakfast then transfer 3 hours overland to Sandakan for return flights. Time to say Goodbye for now – until next time! Breakfast and Lunch included.

Participants must arrive in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on the 10th of the month the program begins. In between 6.00am until 6.00pm, airport transfer to Downbelow Adventure Lodge is free. After the specified time, transfer is chargeable.

Due to weather conditions, activities may be subject to re-scheduling to best meet operations, as well as clients health and safety. Wildlife cannot be predicated nor guaranteed because it is a spontaneous chance to spot any in their natural rainforest habitat.

Nature Guides

Our partner lodge where you will be staying employs the guides. It's very important that the guides are from the local area, this way their eyes and ears and "in-tune" to the wildlife. Rest assured that the guides that we request for our clients are very experienced and we receive fantastic feedback from our clients about them.
