Danum Valley Field Centre

At 130 million years old, the forest of Danum Valley is one of the few places in the world where visitors can experience the magnificent splendour of nature in its original, unspoiled state. Renowned for its diverse plant and animal life, our clients have a rare opportunity to go on a borneo safari while staying at Danum Valley Field Centre.

Extremely rare and endangered species are known to roam the jungle. Pygmy Elephant, Bornean Gibbon, Leaf Monkey and Clouded Leopard have all been spotted before. Orang utans and proboscis monkeys, both found only in Borneo, also roam freely and are often seen in the wild jungle of Danum Valley.

Danum Valley Field Centre

Ex Lahad Datu: Covering 43, 800 hectares (438 km2), the Danum Valley Conservation Area is one of the largest, most important and best-protected expanses of pristine lowland forest remaining in South East Asia situated in South-eastern Sabah, Malaysia Borneo. On its eastern border is the Danum Valley Field Centre, approximately 70 km inland from the town of Lahad Datu, Sabah. It is probably the leading rainforest research centre in the “old world” tropics. The Danum Valley Field Centre was established in 1986 as a facility for conducting research and supporting scientists in the rainforest studies.

The lowland tropical rainforest is home to many birds and mammals. It is the only place where the enigmatic spectacled flowerpecker has been recorded. Bornean orangutans, Müller’s Bornean gibbons, and other primates, including Horsfield’s tarsier, as well as deer, wild cats and the rare Bornean pygmy elephant may be seen.

Danum Valley Field Centre

The rich insect fauna has been one of the main areas of research in which the Danum Valley Field Centre has been active, and the land snail fauna is also considered one of the richest in the world, with at least 61 species recorded from a 1-km-plot.

Flora is primarily that of the Borneo lowland rain forest habitat, with dipterocarp trees predominating. In places the forest canopy reaches a height of over 90 meters, within it is the worlds tallest tropical tree standing at 94.1m.  The valley is home to over 15,000 plant species, though 94% of the plants belong to the dipterocarp genus. Other flora seen in the valley are pitcher plants. The valley is bowl-shaped, with a maximum land height of 1093m.

What makes Danum Valley Field Centre particularly interesting is that its located right on the boarder of secondary forest so visitors experience primary & secondary jungle. Jungle walks, including night walks, bring visitors closer to the sights and sounds of the jungle.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the jungle is quiet, it can be as noisy as a busy city with the different critters trying to outdo each other for attention. For more information on Danum Valley Field centre, contact us and we will provide full details on our programs.

Facilities at Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC)

DVFC was established to accommodate field scientists studying the area. As a result the accommodation, food, facilities & customer service level of the centre is not what tourists might expect. Its one of the reasons we love it! You must be prepared for basic rooms, cold showers and simple food. The main dining area provides unlimited drinking water, tea and coffee. Beer is available to purchase, if you like a glass of wine after a hard day of trekking, bring your own, you can store your wine or any extra food you want to bring in the communal fridge. We always take a large bag of musli for breakfast becuase breakfast consists of fried noodles, bread and jam.

Private Guiding at Danum Valley Field Centre

All our Danum Valley expeditions are based on private guiding with one of our own Downbelow Specialist Nature Guides. This way the daily program is private and tailored specifically for you. Together with your guide you will decide upon the length & difficulty of your trek based on what fauna & flora you are hoping to encounter.

Your Safety is Our Priority
