Proboscis Monkey Fireflies Tour

Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre

Your Sepilok, Sun Bear, Labuk Bay Day Trip starts with meeting your guide upon arrival in Sandakan or at your hotel in Sandakan and then proceed on with the 30 minutes drive to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. This is where orphaned and injured Orang Utans are brought to be nurtured and prepared for their return to the jungle. Witness the orang utans coming from the jungle to feed on a special platform filled with nutritional but from an orang utans point of view – bland food. This concept is specifically designed to encourage them to find more interesting food in the surrounding jungle. You will also get to watch a documentary at the Sepilok Information building that highlights the plight of the Orang Utans and the rehabilitation process.

Sun Bear Conservation Centre

After the Orang Utan visit, take a walk to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre. The mission of the centre is to rescue these sun bears and promote their conservation to return to the forest – a must visit for wildlife lovers. The centre is equipped with key facilities including observation platform, boardwalk and a visitor centre.

Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary

After lunch, proceed to Labuk Bay where visitors will find plenty of entertainment in observing the dynamics of family members within a harem of Proboscis Monkeys. They are wonderfully lively primates – honking, roaring and squealing their communication to one another. As an endangered species endemic to the island of Borneo, they are fiercely protected. Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary was founded by a local oil palm plantation owner, who was fascinated by the unique animals, so the land was bought by the generous benefactor to remain as the proboscis monkeys natural mangrove swamp habitat. Food sources are limited for the proboscis monkey, due to surrounding area consisting of only oil palm plantations, so to assist their nutrition requirement feeding times at the observation areas are schedule twice a day at both platforms.
