Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Ex Lahad Datu: Tabin was declared a Wildlife Reserve in 1984 largely on account of its large animal population, some of which are highly endangered. Sabah’s 3 largest mammals, Borneo Pygmy Elephant and Tembaday (wild cattle), are all found in Tabin Wildlife Reserve. There are also 9 primate species and 3 cat species, all of which are on the protected wildlife list.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve

The reserve comprises a rectangular area of approximately 122,539 hectare in the centre of the Dent Peninsula, north-east of Lahad Datu town, south of the lower reaches of the Segama River and north of the Silabukan Forest Reserve.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve is a popular location from where to observe the rich bio-diversity of Sabah and part-take in nature activities, like jungle-trekking, night safari, night walks, wildlife spotting, bird watching and rainforest education. One of the highlights of Tabin is the active and mineral-rich mud volcanoes, which frequently attracts wildlife looking for mineral supplements. Most of the reserve is covered mainly with lowland dipterocarp forest.

An area that attracts an amazingly rich diversity of birds, Tabin is a bird-watchers’ paradise. Guests can expect to see colourful and vibrant birds when trekking the trails at Tabin Wildlife Reserve. The relatively low canopy with ample natural light, makes birding and photography a delightful experience. About 42 indigenous families of bird representing more than 260 bird species have been recorded here, including 8 of Sabah’s Hornbill species. They are Black Hornbill, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Pied Hornbill, White-crowned Hornbill, Wrinkled Hornbill, Bushy-crested Hornbill and Helmeted Hornbill.

Other sought-after species are the Blue-headed Pitta, Black and crimson Pitta, Malaysian Blue Flycatcher, Temminck’s Sunbird, Purple-throated Sunbird, Everett’s White-eye and the Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker. Rarely seen species such as Storm’s Stork, Jambu Fruit Dove, Large Green Pigeon, White-fronted Falconet, Great-billed Heron and Giant Pitta have all been sighted in Tabin Wildlife Reserve.
